Preparing Your Customer Data for Unification

Unified customer profiles are only as good as the data behind them. Five areas to address before you start a customer data initiative.

Unified customer profiles promise a single view of every customer across sales, service, marketing and commerce. Platforms such as Salesforce Data 360 provide the tools to create them. The quality of the result, however, depends heavily on preparation.

1. Inventory your sources

List every system that holds customer data, what it holds, how current it is and who owns it. This inventory often reveals sources nobody had considered, as well as sources that are less reliable than assumed.

2. Understand your identifiers

Identity resolution links records that belong to the same person. It relies on identifiers such as email addresses, phone numbers, customer numbers and device IDs. Assess which identifiers each system holds, how consistently they are captured and how they are formatted.

3. Agree definitions

Terms such as "customer", "active" and "household" often mean different things to different teams. Agreeing definitions before modeling avoids profiles and segments that nobody trusts.

4. Address consent early

Consent and preferences must travel with the data. Decide how consent is captured, stored and applied so unified profiles can be used responsibly and in line with the regulations that apply to you.

5. Start with a use case

Unification is a means to an end. Choose one or two use cases, such as giving service agents a fuller customer view or improving a high-value marketing segment, and let them guide which data to prioritize.

  • A clear use case keeps scope manageable.
  • It provides a measurable outcome.
  • It reveals data issues in a controlled way.

Organizations that invest in this preparation tend to reach useful results sooner, and build profiles that teams actually rely on.
